"The River"
Garth Brooks

by Frank Kesman, Principal
Sunday, May 29, 2005

A river, ever flowing, ever changing, pursuing its path
Always seeking, never resting, finding its way.
Garth Brooks wrote of a river and his words are the perfect expression of my hope for each of you.
Here is what he said.

You know a dream is like a river ever changin' as it flows
And a dreamer's just a vessel that must follow where it goes
Trying to learn from what's behind you and never knowing what's in store
Makes each day a constant battle just to stay between the shores

Too many times we stand aside and let the waters slip away
'Til what we put off 'til tomorrow it has now become today
So don't you sit upon the shoreline and say you're satisfied
Choose to chance the rapids and dare to dance that tide

And I will sail my vessel 'Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind these waters are my sky
I'll never reach my destination if I never try
So I will sail my vessel 'Til the river runs dry
Lord, I will sail my vessel 'Til the river runs dry

Many years ago, our daughter, Amy, shared these words with me as I share them now with you. So today, I wish for each of you a life of fulfilled dreams as you continue to seek, never resting, pursuing your path and finding your way.

On a personal note, you, the Class of 2005 represents all the classes of students that I have known over the last 36 years. I am indebted to each and every student; each and every one of you for our paths have crossed and collectively, my rewards have been beyond measure.

My greatest hope and greatest wish today, regardless of your path, is that you remain a dreamer, ever flowing, finding your way.

On behalf of the Board of Education, our Superintendent, Dr. Barbara Erwin, and the entire staff of St. Charles North High School , we welcome you to our Commencement celebration. We are pleased that we are able to share this very special time with you today. Thank you.
